Happy 70th Anniversary to the Section on Statistical Education! Please join me in taking a moment to reflect on how statistical education has changed in the last 10, 20, 50 years. I think we should all be proud of our efforts to effect positive change in teaching statistics to a growing and increasingly diverse group of learners and hopefully you have had a few more conversations like I did last week when someone asked me what I did–it was his favorite course! I predict many more changes and improvements this year alone as new ideas and opportunities arise. Here is a sampling of some of the activities this year:
Continuation and expansion of the section mentoring program
A new format for JSM roundtables for the section
Exploring training programs for graduate students interested in teaching
Exploring avenues for more outreach and support to our members who teach statistics in high school and community college
Collaborative efforts in diversity, data science, and ethics
Be sure to put eCOTS (May 21-25) on your calendar, and I look forward to seeing many of you in person at ICOTS (July 8-13) and JSM (July 28-Aug 2)! Also continue to follow along the email and social media conversations on other activities. Please contact me (bchance@calpoly.edu) or any officer if you have ideas for advancing our mission. We also have opportunities to provide “seed money” to new initiatives that will benefit our members.
Thanks to all of you for your membership in the Section and for your support of these activities and your ongoing creative ideas. Please continue to encourage friends and colleagues to join the section!
Sincerely,
Beth Chance
Chair, ASA Section on Statistical Education
