eCOTS 2020
The Electronic Conference on Teaching Statistics (eCOTS) took place May 18 - 22. The sessions, workshops, and posters covered a variety of topics in statistics and data science education, and the theme "Engaging Everyone" was a common thread throughout the week. Roxy Peck, Professor Emeritus at California Polytechnic State University, gave a keynote address about fostering engagement through "context, connections, communication, and commitment". In her keynote address, Hilary Parker, a data scientist at Stitch Fix, encouraged us to use principles from design to rethink what it looks like to do statistics in practice and how we teach it in the classroom.
Recordings of the sessions and virtual posters are available online.
Retiring the R.A. Fisher Award & Lecture
On June 23, Bhramar Mukherjee, Chair of the Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies (COPSS), announced that COPSS is officially retiring the R.A. Fisher Award & Lecture. This year's award recipient, Dr. Kathryn Roeder, will receive the COPSS Distinguished Achievement Award and Lectureship at JSM.
This decision came after weeks of input from the statistics community, including a recommendation from ASA leadership and an open letter from recent, current, and future chairs of our section in support of renaming the award. The discussion to rename the award was initiated by a Twitter thread by Daniela Witten, Dorothy Gilford Endowed Chair of Mathematical Statistics at the University of Washington, and a change.org petition started by Miles Ott, Assistant Professor of Statistical & Data Sciences at Smith College. In response, COPSS provided an opportunity for members to comment on the award through an open online form and there has been much discussion within the ASA community.
You can read the full statement from COPSS here.
